Chilla-i-Kalan Set to End on Dry Note

SRINAGAR: Chilla-i-Kalan—the 40-day period of harsh winter—in Kashmir is set to end on a dry note, as there is no forecast of major weather activity until the end of January. Jammu and Kashmir has recorded an 81 percent deficit in rainfall during the first three weeks of 2025.Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted mostly dry and cloudy weather conditions until January 31. However, he said that there is a possibility of light rain and snow at isolated places on January 23, and between January 29 and 30.jammu and Kashmir has recorded an 81 percent deficit in rainfall as of today (January 22), with just 11.4 mm of rainfall against a normal of 60.5 mm. The highest deficiency has been recorded in Kathua, at 98 percent from January 1 to 22.Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has recorded a 71 percent deficit in rainfall, while Shopian has seen the second-highest deficiency at 94 percent.Reasi, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Jammu, and Doda have all experienced rainfall deficiencies of 90 percent or more during the period. Meanwhile, Udhampur, Samba, and Ramban have recorded deficits of above 80 percent in the past 22 days.Anantnag and Pulwama districts in South Kashmir have seen a deficiency of 77 percent and 75 percent respectively. The data also revealed that Budgam, Bandipora, and Rajouri have recorded deficiencies of 69 percent, 63 percent, and 64 percent, respectively. (KNO)
