The Kashmir Dialogues | Srinagar : winter tightens its icy grip, the picturesque Kashmir Valley is set to enter the 40-day-long ‘Chillai Kalan,’ a period marked by intense cold and transformative beauty. Starting on December 21 and concluding on January 30, this season encapsulates the harshest winter experience, casting a magical spell over the region. During Chillai Kalan, a bone-chilling cold wave envelopes the valley, causing temperatures to plummet dramatically. Water bodies, including the iconic Dal Lake, succumb to the freeze, while water supply lines in various parts of the region become icy veins. The anticipation of substantial snowfall prompts residents of the hill areas to stockpile firewood for warmth and sustenance. The snowfall during this period not only blankets the landscape in pristine white but also serves a vital role in replenishing Kashmir’s streams, rivers, and lakes. Long icicles dangle from the branches of Chinar trees, apple orchards, and the rooftops of homes, transforming the valley into a winter wonderland. Chillai Kalan is renowned for its frequent and heavy snowfall, particularly in the higher reaches. As communities brace themselves for the biting cold, the snow brings both challenges and enchantment to the region. The sight of snow-covered landscapes and the quiet beauty of frozen water bodies contribute to the unique allure of Kashmir during this time. Even as Chillai Kalan officially concludes on January 30, the cold wave persists with a 20-day-long ‘Chillai Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day-long ‘Chillai Bachha’ (baby cold). The resilience of Kashmiris during these harsh winter months becomes evident as they navigate through the challenges posed by nature, finding warmth in the glow of fires and the spirit of community. In the heart of winter, Kashmir stands as a testament to the harmony between nature’s harshness and the indomitable spirit of its people, making Chillai Kalan a time to marvel at the frozen majesty of this captivating valley.(TKD).
