Beyond the Uniform: The Untold Story of Sajad

Baramulla’s Silent Warrior Against Drugs, Despair and Darkness

In the crowded lanes of Baramulla, where life moves between uncertainty and hope, there walks a man who rarely seeks recognition, yet has quietly become a symbol of courage, compassion, and resilience. Some know him as a Special Police Officer. Others know him as the man who arranges blood at midnight, counsels troubled youth, rushes patients to hospitals, or stands beside grieving families when no one else arrives.
But to many across the region, Sajad represents something greater — a new face of public service in Kashmir: humane, fearless, and deeply rooted in the community.
His story is not merely about policing. It is about purpose.

A Uniform Worn With Responsibility, Not Authority

When Sajad joined the Jammu & Kashmir Police as a Special Police Officer (SPO) in 2017, he stepped into one of the most demanding professions in the region. In a place where every day can bring unpredictable challenges, policing is not just a job; it is a test of endurance, discipline, and character.

Yet from the beginning, Sajad approached the uniform differently.
For him, authority was never about intimidation. It was about responsibility. Colleagues describe him as disciplined in operations, respectful in conduct, and unwavering in difficult situations. While many perform duty because it is assigned, Sajad became known for performing it because he believed in it.
His operational role in anti-drug and NDPS-related work placed him at the frontline of one of Kashmir’s fastest-growing social crises. Drug abuse had begun creeping silently into neighborhoods, targeting vulnerable youth and tearing apart families from within. The fight against narcotics demanded more than occasional crackdowns; it required patience, intelligence gathering, community trust, and relentless fieldwork.
Sajad embraced that challenge with remarkable consistency.
Whether conducting area sweeps, assisting investigations, or gathering ground-level inputs, he earned a reputation as someone who never cut corners. His approach was methodical, calm, and professional — qualities that eventually brought him formal recognition from senior police leadership.

Recognition Earned Through Sacrifice

Recently, the Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, included Sajad in the official reward list, honouring him with a Cash Reward and a prestigious Class-A Commendation Certificate. Such recognition is reserved for personnel who demonstrate exceptional dedication and measurable contributions under demanding conditions.
For many, awards become milestones.
For Sajad, they became reminders that the mission must continue.
His role during Operation Sindoor further reflected his commitment to duty. Amid operational pressure and risk, he carried out responsibilities with professionalism and courage, earning additional appreciation from authorities and fellow officers alike.
Yet what makes Sajad’s journey extraordinary is not only what he does inside the system — but what he continues to do outside it.

The Man Who Never Stops Serving

Long after official duty hours end, Sajad’s second battlefield begins: the battlefield of humanity.
Over the years, he has emerged as one of the most active grassroots volunteers in north Kashmir, dedicating himself to humanitarian service with the same seriousness he brings to policing. His work spans multiple organizations, including the Indian Red Cross Society Baramulla, Civil Defence Baramulla, Blood Network Baramulla, YES-JK, and the Save Youth Save Future Foundation.

For countless families, these are not merely organizations.
They are lifelines — and Sajad is often the bridge connecting crisis to relief.
When emergencies strike in Kashmir’s hospitals, especially during late-night hours, finding blood donors can become a race against time. It is in those desperate moments that Sajad’s phone rarely stops ringing. Patients, attendants, volunteers, and hospitals reach out knowing one thing with certainty: he will respond.
And he does.
From coordinating blood donors to arranging transport and navigating medical formalities, Sajad has helped save thousands of lives across Jammu & Kashmir. He works quietly, without publicity campaigns or self-promotion, believing that service loses meaning when reduced to performance.
Many families remember not only the help they received — but the reassurance his presence brought during chaos.

Fighting Drugs Beyond Arrests

What separates Sajad from conventional anti-drug campaigners is his understanding that addiction is not merely a criminal issue; it is also a social tragedy.
While his policing responsibilities involve action against narcotics networks, his humanitarian work focuses on prevention, rehabilitation, and awareness. He understands that behind many addiction cases lie deeper issues — unemployment, emotional distress, social pressure, trauma, and hopelessness.
Instead of relying solely on fear-based messaging, Sajad speaks directly to youth with honesty and empathy.
In schools, local gatherings, awareness drives, and community interactions, he encourages young people to seek purpose before destructive influences find them first. His sessions are not lectures delivered from a distance. They are conversations rooted in lived realities.
He listens before advising.
He understands before judging.
This human approach has helped him connect with young people in ways formal campaigns often fail to achieve. Parents trust him. Teachers rely on him. Youth feel comfortable speaking to him.
And that trust is powerful.
Because in regions struggling with addiction, trust can become the first step toward recovery.

Building Hope Where Despair Once Lived

Sajad firmly believes that fighting drug abuse requires creating opportunities for youth rather than simply warning them about dangers.
Through youth-centered initiatives and volunteer platforms, he advocates for vocational training, sports engagement, mentorship, and community participation. He encourages local organizations and leaders to invest in young people before social problems consume them.
His philosophy is simple:
A young person with direction is less likely to lose themselves in addiction.
That belief drives his constant engagement with community programs. Whether motivating students, helping organize awareness events, or mentoring volunteers, he remains actively involved rather than symbolically associated.
Many youths who once struggled with uncertainty now see him as a role model — not because he speaks loudly, but because he lives the values he promotes.

A Rare Bridge Between Police and People

In conflict-sensitive societies, trust between institutions and communities is often fragile. Yet individuals like Sajad prove that relationships can still be rebuilt through sincerity and consistent service.

By working both within the police system and alongside civil society organizations, he has emerged as a rare bridge-builder in Kashmir’s social landscape. His work humanizes policing while also bringing structure and discipline into volunteer networks.
People no longer see him merely as an officer.
They see him as someone accessible.
Someone dependable.
Someone who arrives.
This dual credibility has made his role especially impactful. In emergency situations, communities cooperate more willingly. In awareness campaigns, participation improves. In volunteer efforts, coordination becomes smoother.
Trust, once earned genuinely, multiplies impact.

The Weight Behind the Service

Behind every public act of service lies a private cost.
Balancing operational policing with relentless volunteer work is physically exhausting and emotionally demanding. Emergencies do not wait for convenience. Humanitarian crises rarely follow schedules. Rest often becomes secondary.
Like many grassroots workers, Sajad faces limitations in resources, infrastructure, and institutional support. Awareness programs need funding. Rehabilitation systems require strengthening. Remote areas continue facing logistical difficulties.
Yet despite these challenges, he continues.
Not because the road is easy — but because too many people depend on those willing to walk it.

More Than an Individual Story

What makes Sajad’s journey remarkable is that it reflects the possibility of a different social model for Kashmir — one where public service goes beyond official duty, where policing includes compassion, and where youth empowerment becomes a security strategy in itself.
His story demonstrates that real change does not always begin in grand institutions or high offices. Sometimes it begins with one individual answering phone calls at midnight, organizing blood donors during emergencies, guiding vulnerable youth away from addiction, and showing up repeatedly when society needs someone dependable.
That consistency becomes influence.
That influence becomes leadership.
And that leadership inspires collective action.

The Quiet Meaning of Courage

In today’s world, courage is often associated with dramatic moments. But in reality, some of the bravest people are those who quietly continue serving despite fatigue, danger, and limited recognition.
Sajad belongs to that category.
He does not chase headlines.
He does not seek applause.
Yet through discipline, humility, and relentless dedication, he has become a symbol of something deeply needed in Kashmir today: hope rooted in action.
A patient receiving blood in time.
A struggling youth choosing rehabilitation over addiction.
A family finding help during crisis.
A volunteer network responding faster because someone coordinated it efficiently.
Behind many such moments stands a figure who chose service not as an occasional act — but as a way of life.
And perhaps that is the most powerful part of Sajad’s story.
Not that he wears a uniform.
But that beneath the uniform beats the heart of a man determined to heal the society he serves.
