In a profound and emotional homage to extraordinary courage and selfless sacrifice, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has renamed the main intersection in Baramulla town as ‘Bindaas Chowk’, immortalizing the heroic legacy of Constable Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh — affectionately known as Bindaas by his colleagues and community alike.
A Braveheart from Uri: Hailing from the border town of Uri in Baramulla district, 32-year-old Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh served in the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police. Known for his fearless nature, unwavering commitment, and ever-smiling demeanor, he earned the affectionate moniker Bindaas, a word that perfectly captured his bold and daring spirit.
The Fateful Night of Valor: On the night of May 25, 2022, acting on credible intelligence about the movement of foreign terrorists, security forces laid a cordon in the Najibhat area of Kreeri. In the face of grave danger, Mudasir rose to the occasion with exemplary bravery. Engaging three heavily armed Pakistani terrorists, he managed to neutralize all three, ensuring the safety of his fellow personnel and civilians. Despite sustaining serious injuries, he continued to fight valiantly till his last breath, laying down his life in the line of duty.
Nation’s Tribute – The Shaurya Chakra: In recognition of his exceptional gallantry, Constable Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry honors. The citation hailed his indomitable courage, unflinching spirit, and supreme sacrifice for the motherland.
Inauguration of ‘Bindaas Chowk’
On November 22, 2022, in a solemn yet proud moment, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh inaugurated ‘Bindaas Chowk’, unveiling a bust of the braveheart at the heart of Baramulla town. The site now stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect the nation with their lives.
A Family’s Pain and Pride
Speaking with a heavy heart, Mudasir’s father, Mohammad Maqsood Sheikh, a retired police sub-inspector, shared his grief and pride:
“My son gave his life for the nation. His loss is irreparable, but he made us and the entire country proud.”
A Legacy That Will Endure
The renaming of the chowk is not just an official gesture—it is a permanent mark of respect, a tribute etched into the soul of Baramulla. Bindaas Chowk is more than a name; it is a monument to courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication. It will continue to inspire generations of Kashmiris and Indians, reminding them of a young man from Uri who dared to stand between danger and his people—and paid the ultimate price.
Martyr Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh lives on—not just in medals and memorials, but in the hearts of a grateful nation.
