J&K Police Initiates Inquiry Into Public Handling of Theft Suspect in Jammu’s Bakshi Nagar

Jammu, June 24, 2025:
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have ordered an official inquiry into an incident involving the treatment of a theft suspect in the Bakshi Nagar locality of Jammu, following public outcry over video footage that surfaced on social media.

The video, which quickly went viral, appears to show the suspect being subjected to a form of public handling that has raised serious concerns about due process and the dignity of individuals in police custody. Senior police officials took immediate cognizance of the matter after the footage attracted widespread attention and criticism.

In response, the department has tasked the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) North Jammu with conducting a thorough and impartial investigation. The inquiry aims to ascertain the circumstances of the incident, the actions taken by personnel on the ground, and whether any protocols were violated.

Authorities have stated that the probe will be completed within a week. They emphasized that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, in keeping with the principles of accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights.
