Baramulla, February 22 (TKD) – In a remarkable shift from its past, Old Town Baramulla is now embracing education and positivity, thanks to initiatives like GAASH Academy. Founded by philanthropist Sheikh Mudasir, the academy provides free educational assistance to 80 underprivileged children and orphans from kindergarten to Class X, guiding them toward a brighter future.
The hard work of GAASH Academy’s students paid off as they achieved outstanding results in the JKBOSE exams 2025. Their success was recognized in a special ceremony attended by top officials, including the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Dagger Division and the Baramulla Brigade Commander, who visited the academy to felicitate the achievers and encourage their academic journey.
Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Mr. Minga Sherpa, also praised the academy’s efforts, acknowledging the crucial role of GAASH Academy and the District Administration in shaping the aspirations of Old Town’s children. The event saw participation from Senior Advocate Ms. Nilofar, Additional SP Baramulla Mr. Altaf, local Mohalla Presidents, Maulwis, and other dignitaries.
During the visit, proud parents expressed their deep gratitude to Sheikh Mudasir and the Indian Army for supporting their children’s education. The Army’s continued encouragement and financial aid have been instrumental in sustaining the initiative. A financial grant of ₹4 lakh, sports kits, and stationery were presented to further strengthen the academy’s resources. Previously, the Army had donated a computer system, generator, furniture, and other essentials to support the cause.
Teachers from various schools in Baramulla emphasized the transformative power of education, highlighting the remarkable progress of students. Ms. Sonabar Wani, an overwhelmed teacher, remarked, “Thanks to the Indian Army, our children have received a platform where I have personally witnessed a student’s marks improving from 38% to 83% in just one year.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Sheikh Mudasir expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am deeply thankful to the Indian Army and District Administration for their unwavering support. I urge all parents to encourage their children to pursue education, as it is the key to a prosperous future.”
Once misled into separatist ideology as a teenager, Mudasir dropped out of school, joined protests, and aligned with Hizbul Mujahideen. Now at 36 and battling a brain tumor, he dedicates his life to counseling Old Town’s youth, urging them to choose education over violence. “Don’t ruin your lives,” he warns, offering his own past as a lesson.
GAASH Academy stands as a beacon of hope, proving that education and guidance can change lives. With the support of the administration and the Indian Army, Old Town’s children are stepping into a future of knowledge, progress, and prosperity–(TKD)
