Seher Hashmi, a mental health mentor, fashion stylist, and motivational speaker, has transformed her personal struggles with mental health into a beacon of hope for others. In an exclusive interview with Rameez Makhdoomi, Seher shares her inspiring journey and her upcoming bike journey across North India to raise awareness about mental health.
Tell us about your bike journey to raise awareness about mental health.
I’ve battled mental health issues for over 10 years, and I’ve emerged stronger. I want to break the taboos surrounding mental health. People often judge those struggling, and this stigma prevents open discussions. I’ll be covering several cities in North India, sharing my experiences and spreading awareness.
You’re accompanied by a fellow activist, Dev Desai. How did this collaboration come about?
Dev Desai, a veteran activist, has worked with my mother on humanitarian issues. He’s witnessed my journey and will join me on this historic ride from Delhi to Kashmir. His presence will be invaluable, especially since we’ll be covering a long distance.
What issues will you focus on during your bike journey talks?
I’ll discuss diverse mental health issues, their solutions, and treatments. I want to emphasize that mental health issues are just like physical illnesses – anyone can experience them. My personal journey, including being an adopted child, has taught me that mental health issues can affect anyone.
As a fashion stylist, how do you balance your creative pursuits with mental health advocacy?
Although I studied at NIFT Delhi and assisted a fashion stylist in Mumbai, I had to prioritize my mental health. Now, I apply my fashion expertise to help others through advice and guidance. Mental health counseling has become my full-time profession, and I’m committed to helping others.
What motivated you to overcome your mental health crisis?
Family support, regular counseling, and medication were crucial. Helping others during my own struggles surprised my parents and gave me purpose. Many of those I helped are now successful and thriving.
Will your program be open to youth only during your upcoming journey to Kashmir?
My primary focus is on schools and colleges, but I hope to include larger audiences in Srinagar and Kupwara.
What are your future goals?
I aim to spread awareness about mental health, emphasizing that anyone can experience it. We must be supportive and respectful of each other’s emotions and sensitivities.
Who inspires you?
My journey and supportive parents inspire me.
Any message for humanity?
Let’s talk about mental health issues, especially post-pandemic. We need to support each other and break free from stigmas. Giving up is not the solution – if I can overcome my struggles, others can too.
Do you feel there’s a dearth of mental health experts in our regions?
Yes, but the larger issue is the stigma surrounding mental health. We must break these shackles and understand that mental health controls our entire well-being.
