JAMMU, June 23: A proposal to promote four IPS officers of the 2007 batch from DIGs to IGPs, and six IPS officers of the 2011 batch from SSPs to DIGs, is under active consideration by the UT Government, with a decision expected shortly in consultation with the Union Home Ministry.
According to official sources, the promotions are aimed at addressing the shortage of IPS officers in the ranks of IGPs and DIGs, exacerbated by many officers being on Central deputation. Currently, some Additional DGPs are managing additional IGP duties.
The four DIGs slated for promotion to IGPs include:
- Sunil Gupta, DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range
- Sujit Kumar, DIG CID Kashmir
- Vivek Gupta, DIG North Kashmir
- M Suleman Choudhary, DIG Personnel (Police Headquarters)
These officers are officially eligible for promotion on January 1, 2025, but due to pressing needs, the Government may advance their promotions by six months, a practice used previously.
Likewise, six SSPs from the 2011 batch are likely to be promoted to DIGs:
- Dr. Vinod Kumar, SSP Jammu
- Maqsood-ul-Zaman, Staff Officer to IG Traffic Jammu and Kashmir
- Mubassir Latifi, Commandant IRP 10th Battalion, Anantnag
- Shiv Kumar Sharma, Principal PTTI Vijaypur
- Rashmi Wazir, Commandant IR 12th Battalion, Nud, Samba
- Rajeshwar Singh, SSP CID Headquarters
Dr. Vinod Kumar, a Direct Recruit, and five others from the State Police Services (SPS) are expected to receive their promotions ahead of their January 1, 2025 eligibility.
With eight DIG posts currently vacant in Jammu and Kashmir, the promotions are crucial. As Jammu and Kashmir falls under the AGMUT cadre, the UT Government is awaiting the Union Home Ministry’s approval, which is anticipated soon due to the officer shortage.
