Kuch Kahaniyian Bhool Jaate Hain Hum!

Rampur Village in District Kathua has its own story…………..It is bigger than one most of us think!

-Oh, monsters are scared, said …. That’s why they’re monsters but we have got the protection! Don’t be afraid of being scared. To be afraid is a sign of common sense. Only complete idiots are not afraid of anything said my mother as we saw the shadows as they passed by! We had only a lamp lit! Don’t be scared. Don’t let them see….I switched off the lamp! Then I thought, It’s OKAY to be scared. Being scared means you’re about to do something really, really brave!….I had a pick axe in my hands……………!

-The most iconic story of bravery from the Rampur sector, often associated with the Uri-Rampur sector in Jammu & Kashmir, is that of Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal, who is known as the “Saviour of Kashmir”.

-Here is the story of his unparalleled valour:

-The Mission (October 1947): Following the Pakistani tribal invasion of Jammu & Kashmir, Brigadier Rajinder Singh was ordered by Maharaja Hari Singh to hold the invaders at Uri at all costs. He was given the mandate of fighting to the “last man and last bullet”.

-Holding the Line: Brig. Singh led a small contingent of about 100 soldiers of the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces (later J&K Rifles) to confront thousands of invaders. He fought a classical withdrawal battle, stalling the enemy advance at Garhi, Uri, and Rampur.

-The Sacrifice (October 26-27, 1947): For four crucial days, his small team hindered the enemy, enabling Indian reinforcements to arrive. He fought till the very end, and on the night of October 26-27, while leading his convoy near Buniyar-Rampur, he was mortally wounded but continued to direct the battle, ensuring the enemy advanced only over his dead body.

-Legacy: His actions delayed the raiders long enough for the Instrument of Accession to be signed on October 26, 1947, effectively saving Kashmir for India. He became independent India’s first Maha Vir Chakra awardee.

-Other Examples of Bravery in the Area:

-Naik Shankar Singh Mehra (May 2020): A more recent story from the same sector, Nk Shankar Singh of 21 Kumaon made the ultimate sacrifice during a fierce ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the Rampur sector.

-60 Years of Haji Pir (1965): The Dagger Division commemorated the battle of Haji Pir Pass at Rampur, recognizing the sacrifices made by soldiers to capture strategic heights in 1965.
