Srinagar, February 9: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has reiterated his demand for the release of all political prisoners, urging the Government of India to take immediate steps to address their plight. He expressed deep concern over the continued detention of political leaders, activists, lawyers, media personnel, and youth, stressing that their rights must be upheld as per the law.
In a statement issued to the media, Mirwaiz emphasized that political prisoners must be treated with dignity, and their basic rights, including medical care and communication with their families, should not be denied. He also called upon the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir to fulfill its responsibilities as outlined in its manifesto and take necessary measures for their release.
Concerns Over Engineer Rashid’s Health
Mirwaiz’s statement comes in the wake of reports regarding the deteriorating health of Engineer Rashid, the former MLA from Langate, who has been shifted to a hospital. Expressing concern, he stated that such cases highlight the urgent need for authorities to reconsider their approach toward political detainees.
Additionally, Mirwaiz condemned the reported decision of Tihar Jail authorities to withdraw phone call and e-mulaqat (video call) facilities for prisoners under the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Calling it an unjust measure, he said such restrictions further isolate the detainees and add to their families’ distress.
“Severity in Dealing with Kashmiris is a Zero-Sum Game”
Mirwaiz warned that harsh policies towards Kashmiri political prisoners serve no constructive purpose and only deepen alienation. He pointed out that several elderly prisoners are suffering from serious health issues, and the authorities must take a humanitarian approach rather than prolonging their incarceration.
“The health condition of many political prisoners is a matter of grave concern, not just for their families but for all people,” he said.
Mirwaiz also urged human rights organizations and legal bodies to intervene and ensure that due process is followed in the treatment of political detainees. He stressed that dialogue, reconciliation, and justice must take precedence over harsh punitive measures.
