DGP Raises Alarm on Internet’s Role in Sustaining Militancy in J&K

Jammu, June 23: Addressing concerns over the growing influence of the internet in perpetuating militancy and separatism in Jammu and Kashmir, Director General of Police R R Swain highlighted significant challenges posed by cyber activities orchestrated by Pakistani handlers.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Cyber Police Station building in Jammu zone adjacent to Police Station Bagh-e-Bahu, Swain underscored that the internet has emerged as a crucial medium for sustaining terrorism in the region. He cited that approximately 75% of the security challenges in the area are linked to cyber activities, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

“Cyber crime encompasses a broad spectrum and often intersects with traditional crimes,” Swain stated, expressing concerns over foreign messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram that, he claimed, compromise the sovereignty of licensed telecom providers in India. “I have raised this issue at the highest levels due to its significant security implications,” he added.

Swain recounted instances where Pakistan-based handlers, collaborating with local agents, orchestrated attacks through meticulous planning using cyberspace. “They strategize infiltration routes, coordinate drops of arms, ammunition, and explosives, all while evading detection in the virtual realm,” he explained, contrasting these operations with past methods that were easier to monitor through physical meetings or telephone surveillance.

Acknowledging the evolving nature of threats, Swain stressed the necessity of adapting countermeasures, affirming that national security must not be compromised under the guise of privacy concerns. “While privacy is essential, any misuse that leads to crime, fraud, or attempts to destabilize the government cannot be tolerated,” he asserted.

Highlighting the previously neglected focus on cyber crime in Jammu and Kashmir, Swain noted the establishment of cyber police stations across all 20 revenue districts and three police districts in the Union Territory. He cited instances of cyber crimes ranging from financial fraud to exploitation of vulnerable individuals, cautioning that perpetrators operating beyond India’s borders pose unique challenges.

“In an interconnected world, identifying fraudsters who operate internationally presents complex hurdles,” Swain remarked, emphasizing the need for robust international cooperation to combat7 cross-border cyber threats effectively.

In conclusion, Swain reaffirmed the resolve of law enforcement agencies to confront these challenges head-on. “The fight against cyber-driven militancy and crime is ongoing, and through strengthened cyber capabilities, we are determined to prevail,” he declared.
