SRINAGAR — In a major relief initiative, Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has announced a project to provide 1,500 free smart homes to families impacted by the recent floods, Operation Sindoor, and terrorism. This project, a collaboration with the High-range Rural Development Society (HRDS) India, aims to offer security and a fresh start for some of the region’s most vulnerable residents.
A Comprehensive Rehabilitation Effort
The agreement was formalized in an MoU signed at Raj Bhawan, presided over by LG Sinha. The project will see the construction of three-bedroom smart homes across the Union Territory. Beyond just providing shelter, the initiative includes a wide range of support services designed to enhance the quality of life for the beneficiaries.
Key features of the program include:
- Free Homes: 1,500 three-bedroom smart homes will be built and provided to affected families at no cost.
- Extended Support: Each home will receive free internet access for 15 years through a partnership with BSNL, supporting education and digital inclusion.
- Health and Well-being: The program includes a 15-year life insurance policy for all family members, as well as monthly health check-ups.
- Community Outreach: HRDS India volunteers will visit each household monthly to provide information on new government schemes and conduct awareness sessions on health, education, and hygiene.
- Long-Term Maintenance: The houses will be repainted every five years, free of charge, ensuring their upkeep.
During the signing ceremony, LG Sinha emphasized that the initiative is about “building dreams” and providing a “new chapter in the lives of affected families.” He acknowledged that while human losses are immeasurable, this effort is designed to significantly ease their suffering. The Divisional Commissioners of both Jammu and Kashmir will assist HRDS India in identifying the families whose homes were destroyed.
