Police solve snatching case in Handwara, accused arrestedStolen gold recovered

April 18: In a significant breakthrough, Police in Handwara have successfully solved a handbag snatching case by arresting an accused person and recovered stolen gold from his possession.

On April 15, 2025, Police Station Handwara received a written complaint from one lady (name withheld) resident of Waghat Palpora, Magam. The complainant reported that while she was in Handwara market, she was followed by an unknown person who later snatched her handbag (which contain gold ornaments) near the New Bus Stand Handwara and fled from the scene. Taking cognizance of the matter, a case vide FIR No. 76/2025 under relevant sections of law was registered at police station and investigation was initiated.

During investigation, a dedicated team was assigned to trace the accused. Investigating team with strenuous efforts and by using all technical analysis and available means zeroed in on one suspected person who confessed his involvement in the commission of crime. The accused has been identified as Basit Fayaz Tantray son of Fayaz Ahmad Tantray resident of Khonbal Handwara. He was subsequently arrested, and on his disclosure, the stolen gold ornaments were recovered from his possession.

The swift and professional action by Police has been appreciated by the local community. The case is currently under further investigation to ascertain if the accused is involved in any other similar offences.
