Curbing the Tragic Menace of Traffic Accidents

Road accidents have become a grave concern in Kashmir, carving horror stories year after year. The recent Thar accident, which claimed the lives of two teenagers, has shaken the region. The core issue lies not in the vehicles but in our driving culture and mindset.

The Jammu and Kashmir government’s crackdown on underage driving is a commendable step. As per the law, individuals below the age of 18 must not drive. Parents, too, must play a proactive role in this effort by denying vehicle access to minors and instilling an understanding of the risks involved.

Over the past six years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed over 5,000 road fatalities, with hotspots in Jammu, Srinagar, and Doda. Globally, road crashes claim 1.35 million lives annually, with a disproportionate share in low- and middle-income countries like India. In 2023 alone, India reported a staggering 1.7 lakh road accident deaths.

To address this crisis, a holistic approach is essential:
1. Strict Enforcement: Curb underage and unlicensed driving.
2. Better Infrastructure: Build safer roads and improve traffic management.
3. Education and Awareness: Promote responsible driving habits and the importance of safety gear like helmets and seat belts.
4. Stringent Licensing: Implement tougher driving tests and penalties for violations.

Ultimately, the focus must shift from blaming roads or vehicles to ensuring adherence to traffic rules. By fostering a culture of responsible driving, we can save countless lives and prevent these avoidable tragedies.
