
CS Atal Dulloo Leads Rs 30 Crore Effort to Safeguard Jammu and Kashmir Against Glacial Lake Outburst Floods
Srinagar, June 24: Chief Secretary Sh. Atal Dulloo has directed the Department of Disaster Management to spearhead a comprehensive initiative aimed at studying glacial lakes in Jammu and Kashmir to mitigate the risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF).Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Sh. Atal Dulloo emphasized the need for thorough studies and practical recommendations to prevent disasters like GLOFs. He directed the formation of a specialized team comprising experts, including glaciologists, to conduct expeditions to these lakes and assess their current conditions.The team will also focus on installing Early Warning Systems, Auto Weather Stations, and collecting essential data to formulate a robust mitigation plan against potential GLOFs. A detailed project proposal amounting to Rs 30 crore has been submitted to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for funding support.During a high-level meeting attended by various stakeholders, including experts from universities, research institutions, and government departments, Chief Secretary Sh. Atal Dulloo underscored the importance of prompt and effective action to prevent such disasters and ensure the safety and security of the region.”This initiative is critical to safeguarding our communities from the devastating impacts of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods. Implementation of the project is expected to commence soon, following necessary approvals and funding allocation.
